A West Coast Training for Animal Emergency Management
Last week, Joybound teamed up with Animal Search and Rescue (ASAR) to host members of the animal welfare community for a two-day workshop dedicated to real-world training, peer collaboration, and strategic planning for animal rescue during emergency situations. This workshop was hosted by Eric Thompson and Greg Marshall of ASAR, and open to animal control officers, veterinary professionals, shelter teams, Community Animal Response Teams (CART), Disaster Assistance Response Teams (DART), emergency planners, first responders, and anyone who professionally responds when animals need help.
Wednesday’s curriculum emphasized field safety, situational awareness, interoperability, and operational discipline. It then ended with an evening of delightful animal trivia at Joybound’s monthly Community Team Trivia Night. Thursday’ focused on execution, as the group split into teams to run a series of realistic disaster scenarios, applying their knowledge to potential real-world recovery earthquake situations in Southern California and Northern California to stress-test their protocols, and allow them to leave with actionable plans for their team and jurisdiction.
We’d like to thank everyone who supported or attended this event — you’re ensuring response teams across the West Coast are trained, coordinated and ready when disaster strikes. If you would like to start to get involved with a community animal response team, please contact Cal CARTs, Contra Costa CART, Napa CART, Solano CART, or search for similar organizations near you.
