Goldie’s Story
Sometimes, lifesaving moments happen with little warning.
Goldie, a beautiful Mastiff mix, arrived at Joybound on February 26, 2026, from a partner shelter in Tehama County. Her gentle demeanor and aptitude for service work had her designated for Joybound’s Shelter to Service program, offering her a future as a psychiatric service dog or emotional support animal. Goldie was already on the road to recovery after being treated for kennel cough and soon headed into foster care so our team could assess her suitability as a service dog candidate.
Then, everything changed…
While out on a walk with her foster in the open space areas of Walnut Creek, Goldie was bitten by a rattlesnake. The bite happened so quickly that the incident wasn’t even noticed at first. It was only later that the foster noticed her limping, and Goldie’s hind leg began to swell. What followed was a race against time.
Because Joybound does not keep antivenom on site, Goldie was immediately transported to VEG ER for Pets, where she could receive the specialized, 24‑hour critical care she urgently needed. Due to her size and the severity of the bite, Goldie required multiple vials of antivenom and ongoing pain management. She stayed overnight as the VEG team closely monitored her condition.
Rattlesnake bites are not only extremely painful for dogs, but also extraordinarily expensive to treat. The cost of antivenom, combined with pain injections and round‑the‑clock emergency care, can quickly climb into the five-figure range. Thanks to Joybound’s partnership with VEG, the hospital generously capped Goldie’s bill — resulting in significant savings, while still providing the highest level of care. That partnership made an immediate, lifesaving difference.
Goldie’s recovery wasn’t instant. But in the days and weeks that followed, the swelling slowly subsided, the wound scabbed over, and healing began. Photos from her treatment document the journey — from the frightening first day, through the scabbing phase, to when she was nearly fully healed. With patience, expert medical care, and lots of love, Goldie steadily regained her strength.
Today, Goldie’s story has a hopeful outcome. After a few weeks of recovery, she was adopted by her foster as an emotional support animal (ESA), where she continues to thrive in a safe, loving home. Stories like Goldie’s remind us why strong community partnerships matter so deeply. Joybound’s collaboration with VEG ensures that when the unexpected happens, dogs in our care have access to lifesaving treatment — without hesitation and without compromise. Together, we’re able to say yes to critical care, even in the most urgent moments.
We look forward to checking back in with Goldie’s foster to see how she’s doing today and we’re endlessly grateful to our veterinary partners, foster caregivers, and supporters who make outcomes like this possible.
Because when people and partners come together, lives are saved.
VEG: ER for Pets
VEG ER for Pets (formerly known as Veterinary Emergency Group) makes life-saving care possible for pets in your community. VEG emergency veterinarians and nurses are empowered to make the best decision possible about each patient’s care and say yes to treatment that could save their lives.
Shelter to Service ESAs
Emotional support animals (ESAs) provide many therapeutic benefits to their guardians. Unlike service animals, emotional support animals do not require specialized task training to provide comfort. Their presence alone brings peace and comfort to their families. Emotional support animals do have access to pet-prohibited housing (thanks to the Fair Housing Act). Shelter to Service can provide a personal matching experience for applicants looking to adopt an emotional support cat or dog. Once an application has been submitted and reviewed, an appropriate cat or dog will be evaluated, selected, and matched with the applicant, helping to ensure that the emotional support animal is a good fit for both their home environment and therapeutic goals.
