Eloy’s Journey from Student to Graduate at Joybound’s Grooming Academy

When Eloy first walked through the doors of Joybound’s Engelstad’s Grooming Academy, he never imagined how much his life would change. Today, as the Academy’s first graduate of the Phase Two Pet Groomer program, Eloy has become a shining example of perseverance, dedication, and the power of following one’s passion.

Eloy’s journey into dog grooming began years earlier, rooted in a lifelong love for animals. “I’ve always liked dogs,” Eloy shared. “Back in my hometown, I used to rescue dogs—even had about 50 or 60 at one point! I just knew I wanted to work with them somehow. When I found out about Joybound’s Grooming Academy, I decided to give it a try, and I’m so glad I did.”

His first days at the Academy weren’t without challenges. Eloy quickly discovered that dog grooming required more than simply bathing and trimming fur. “At first, I thought it was going to be easy,” he admitted with a smile. “But it was overwhelming—especially learning to clean ears and clip nails on wiggly dogs. After the first week, I wanted to say no and quit, but I told myself I had to learn those skills. Now, I can do it comfortably and even have customers asking for me by name. That feels amazing.”

Bernie Machado, Director of the Englestad Grooming Academy, remembers Eloy’s determination from the very beginning. “Eloy was a model student,” Bernie said proudly. “From day one, he was calm, eager to learn, and respectful of everyone—our staff, the dogs, and himself. He has a natural ability to help anxious dogs relax because of his patient demeanor. That’s not something you can easily teach, and it’s a gift that makes him an exceptional groomer.”

Through months of hands-on training, Eloy mastered essential grooming skills, from brushing out tangles to precision haircuts. He also discovered the satisfaction of helping dogs feel their best. “Finishing a dog—the whole process—is the most rewarding part,” Eloy explained. “Brushing out mats and tangles can be tedious, but it’s so satisfying when you see the final result. And when the owners come back and tell you how happy their dog looks, it’s the best feeling.”

Eloy’s hard work and dedication culminated in graduation day, an accomplishment he doesn’t take lightly. “This program changed my life because it offered me a career I truly enjoy,” he said. “Three years ago, I didn’t know this was even an opportunity. Now, I get to do something I love every day.”

But Eloy isn’t stopping here. He’s already dreaming about the next chapter in his grooming career. “Eventually, I’d like to learn advanced grooming techniques like coloring and creative styling,” he shared. “There’s always more to learn, and that excites me.”

For those considering a future in dog grooming, Eloy has heartfelt advice: “If you have a passion for dogs, do it. It takes patience and love, especially with challenging dogs, but it’s incredibly satisfying once you master the skills. Don’t give up—if it’s in your heart, follow it.”
