Behind Sugar Pie’s Wagging Tail

Sugar Pie, a bouncy, wiggly Pit Bull Terrier mix from California’s Central Valley, has never met a dog or person she didn’t like. She greets everyone she meets with a happy face and perpetually wagging tail. She’ll do all she is asked for a treat, and is able to focus and be calm when on a walk, at the store, and around loud outside noises. Traits like these make her an excellent candidate to become a psychiatric service dog for a Veteran in ARF’s Pets and Vets program.

Like most dogs found as strays, Sugar Pie’s past was mostly a mystery. No one knows what she experienced before being rescued. But there were clues that indicated her life was not an easy one. In fact, when our clinic team prepped Sugar Pie for her spay surgery, they discovered something terrifying — this sweet dog had a bullet lodged in her shoulder.

Our clinic successfully removed the bullet while performing her sterilization surgery, so she is no longer enduring the shoulder pain and discomfort.

Shortly after she recovered, Sugar Pie was matched with a grateful Veteran, and ready to begin their service dog training together. And as a reminder of the endless (and perhaps undeserved) love and forgiveness dogs have for humans, Sugar Pie’s new guardian has kept the bullet as a keepsake.

Every animal who enters our doors has their own story. Like detectives, we’re often able to piece together clues as to what life was like for our animals before their time with us began. It warms our hearts to know that we are where their happy, new beginnings commence. Sugar Pie’s inspirational second chance was made possible by ARF supporters like you.
